Raleigh Hotel Vintage Key
Necklaces, Limited Edition/One-of-a-Kind, Re-Envisioned (Vintage-to-New)
Ohhhh ... the history this key unlocks!
Since 1815 this historic site (1111 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington D.C.) has been host to both hotels and government offices. One hotel at this address (Kirkwood House), was home to Andrew Johnson, where he stood to take the oath of office as President of the United States, back in 1865. The then seven-story hotel was converted to office space, and in 1893, became the Raleigh Hotel. In 1911, the hotel was reconstructed* in a thirteen-story Beaux-Arts architectural style, remaining as such until 1964.
*Fun Fact: Congress increased the height limit for buildings on Pennsylvania Avenue N.W. by 30 feet in 1910, in order to accommodate the reconstruction of Raleigh Hotel!
Engraved on the key is a postage rate of .02 (2 cents). Two cent postage was effective mid-1885 through the fall of 1917 (when postage went up to 3 cents.) Postage returned to 2 cents in mid-1919 and remained at that rate through mid-1932. The back side of the key displays the room number 324.
